Sorry, We are updating this restaurant menu details.

May 7, 2011 Saturday - Breakfast for Dinner 7 PM 2 People Atmosphere - 5 stars Food - 5 stars Service - 3 stars Background - I am driving a good distance and never been to Idaho Falls and found this place by using Yelp. So we decide on going here. Atmosphere - The restaurant that had an old feeling to it. I think they have only had a few updates to the place since it has opened. They still have the server light box in the dining area, which has been replaced by pagers the waitresses were wearing. Food Appetizer - None was order. Main Course - I had the Little Dutchman with apples. This pancake was light and eggy shaped into a bowl; the crepe like pancake was filled with apples that were a little smaller than apple pie fillings. It was very good. I also ordered a side of German sausage. The sausage was delicious, they brought a side of mustard but that was not needed. The sausage was split down the length (see picture) and fried with a nice crispness to it. Dessert - Did not feel like any. Service - So I was told it was going to be 5 more minutes for my meal as the kitchen burned the bottom of my pancake. This is the hard, part do I dock them a star for burning or give them one for notifying me. Docking as the kitchen should never had burned the meal. So we discuss whether the rest of the food was going to be cold when it came out. My pancake was delivered to table, but not the rest of the food. The waitress said nothing and moved on to take the order of the table next to me. I asked what about the rest of the food when she came by and I got the look of course you idiot. "I am checking on it now". Sorry you should be able to bring out everything for two people on one trip, if not say so. But do not start taking someone else's ordered. The food was hot and good.

Delicious pancakes!!!! I am picky about my pancakes and Smitty's did not disappoint. Warm and fluffy on the inside and crispy on the outside. Be aware that there will be a wait to eat here (we waited about a half hour on a Saturday) but it's worth it. The hubs got eggs benedict and was very happy. Not only do they have an assortment of flavored syrups on the table, they also bring out the maple syrup warm on a plate. Delish!

GET THE PANCAKES! Oh, you don't like pancakes? Go club a baby seal and come back when you're ready to become a functioning member of society that eats pancakes at a self-proclaimed pancake house.

Smitty's was just the right choice for brunch while passing through Idaho Falls. We could get out and stretch our legs, our waitress was extremely sweet and helpful, and the food was pretty good overall - in regards to taste and price. Plus, they serve breakfast all day...my type of restaurant! The only negative is that my Father-in-Law's fish came out partially uncooked. However, when we mentioned to our waitress, she immediately apologized and took it back to the kitchen to recook. Other than that, we had a decent experience!

A capsule description: imagine a locally-owned and run Perkins that also has beer and wine. The pancakes were pretty good. I had the "grandma's hundred year old recipe sourdough" ones and an everything omelet. Not inspired--it was a workmanlike effort. The coffee was beyond hideous, even for a small town pancake house. And that's a puzzlement in this day and age. I mean, this made Starbucks coffee seem great in comparison. They could send someone to McDonalds for takeout coffee and it would be transformationally better. I took a sip and I can still taste it an hour later, it was that stale and nasty. I'd have said something, but anyplace that serves this coffee knows perfectly well that it's offal. And that isn't a typo. I'd have deducted a star for the coffee, but it wasn't morning. If I'd been starting my day I'd have had to search out some more someplace else.

GLUTEN FREE MENU !!! It is always difficult when traveling to find a restaurant that serves gluten free food. I had the gluten free pancakes and they were awesome. What a treat! The food was very good the service was exceptional! We are not consumers of fancy food but just want good food and get back on the road and this is the place that you can find good food reasonably price and the nicest waitresses we've encountered traveling. I highly recommend that you visit this place for great food. No the atmosphere is not perfect but the food and service is fantastic!

The food was pretty good, typical diner food. The woman at the front desk was extremely snippy and rude, our waitress acted like she didn't care we were there. We waited 30 min to be seated and then another 20 before our waitress came by and then another 20 for our food. From the other reviews, we expected a lot more and were pretty disappointed.

No matter what you order...add bacon. Delicious, thick-cut bacon!!!

Really decent food at good prices. I had a Cobb salad and it was huge. Everything was completely fresh. My wife's omelet was excellent as well. Clam chowder was a little fishy tasting, but their fries were also great. We thought this place would be like Denny's, but it is definitely a big step up from them!

What used to be one of my favorite places to dine for breakfast has gone extremely down-hill. The food is mostly the same, it's just the service is so bad. It takes a full 45-50 minutes after sitting down to get your breakfast now. And many times, they mess up your order. It's busy though so though probably don't care. One highlight is the German Sausage. They don't advertise it very well, but you can ask for it and it's fried open faced and very delicious. Don't expect much, and have plenty of time, and you should find it acceptable.

Based on the yelp reviews I saw I was expecting a solid meal and this place delivered. I got the turkey sandwich with gravy and mashed potatoes. The helping was a good size, it was nice and hot when I got it and it was delicious! I was checked-on often so I got as many coffee refills as I needed and when it was time to pay I was checked out quickly. This seems to be a very family friendly spot and the open seating arrangements suggest that. If you are planning to have an important intimate conversation with someone this is probably not the place unless you're cool with everyone inevitably hearing it.

I love this place. It's the same as it always was. Get the buttermilk pancakes and anything with bacon. Everything is good, but those two items are their strengths. Take time to admire the incredible artwork!

I've eaten here every time I find myself in Idaho Falls and I've never been disappointed. The food is delicious and reasonably priced, and the staff is very nice. They also have a great variety beyond just pancakes and steak. (I've honestly never even tried the pancakes personally.)

Went there on a week night...the place was empty. The restaurant was old and dingy - needing updating. (Should have figured as much from the signage and from the window dressings). I'm a chicken fried steak aficionado...so I asked for it with hash browns and some eggs and it came with pancakes. The chicken fried steak was terrible. Let me repeat - TERRIBLE! Rubbery, and not chicken fried very well, and almost no gravy to cover up the pitiful thing. Meanwhile - they didn't screw up the eggs, hash browns or the pancakes. The service was good - I was the only person there! The price was a little high...i.e. 14 bucks....especially since the steak was terrible. I cannot recommend this place...better off at Denny's.

Hubby and I went to Smitty's for our first, and probably last, time on March 1, 2014. The service was GREAT! Attentive servers - it seems everyone had their own job. The person who showed us to our table was not the one who gave us water and coffee (which stayed full), and the lady who swept the floors and told our waitress we were ready to order, apparently only did cleaning. Our waitress was a bit flighty, in her own words, but she said, "Hey, I'm 16! I can't help it!" I ordered the classic buttermilk pancakes. When I got them, they were hot, and I almost suspected, under-cooked. Not that they were, but the center of the top one seemed awfully . . . doughy. But it just may have been a combination of the butter on top and the heat. The flavor? Well, I could tell it was a mix because of the bitter back-taste I got through the entire meal. The pancakes were tender and sopped up syrup well, but that taste. Ugh. Hubby ordered a Denver Omelette with hash-browns and sourdough toast. When it arrived, the cheese and ham mixture on the top was already congealed. Yep, the entire omelette, at best, was warm. It was cooked through, though, but it appeared that it had to sit and wait. The hash-browns were lukewarm, and the toast was cool. I'd say they made his dish and it had to sit and wait for my pancakes because they were steaming hot. The coffee, while fresh, was meh. Boyle coffee diluted down to make-a-profit flavor. All of the stars are for the wait staff. They rocked!

Pretty good food for a good price. But this is 2013, how about updating your decor? They still get good business and it is busy for breakfast of the weekends. So they must be doing something right.

  • Jenna R.

The hostess was quite snippy and rude. The wait was about 30 minutes to be seated and then about 20 minutes to finally order food. The pancakes were great! The omelet was quite good and the chicken fried steak was pretty good. It was a bummer the service was not so great.

Can't believe I'm writing a review about a random pancake house in the middle of nowhere, but just like most of the Yelpers here, I had to show support for the best pancakes I've ever had in my life: Smitty's signature potato pancakes. Not like traditional latkes, these are real pancakes---I don't know how they make them---but they're just fluffy enough, with a slight crisp to the edge. Oh, how I love crispy edges on pancakes. They come with a generous portion of applesauce and sour cream, which is the only way potato pancakes should be eaten anyway. Order them. Now. I don't live anywhere near Idaho Falls, but the next time I'm in Salt Lake City, I will seriously drive the three hours north just to have them again. Okay, now I'm drooling. (Why the four stars instead of five? Indeed, the service is extremely slow, and it's not really that busy. Waited over 30 minutes for our meal to come. Surprised by that, since it seemed very diner-like.)

It was 8 months ago when we stopped by this place on our road trip from California. I meant to write a review, but couldn't do it at the time because the app on my phone is whack. Anyways, I don't remember what I ordered. What I do remember is the service is SUPER friendly (or people are generally nicer in Idaho than in California), and after I cleaned my plate, I didn't feel like driving because I was too full and sleepy!

Stopped in for breakfast. Had the Chicken Fried Steak. It was ok. Not great but not bad. Service was ok also. Wife has egg scramble with ham and cheese. The eggs were still runny. Overall just ok. Wouldn't recommend if your looking for something different.

Based on the reviews, maybe I went on a bad day. My omelet was basic and gave me an upset stomach. My boyfriend had the chicken fried steak and said it was probably the worst he's ever had. Sorry Smitty's! The staff was nice though!

Just this past weekend, I went to Smitty's for breakfast with my family who had traveled from out of town. We had 12 people in our party, so I admit, we were a more difficult group to service. While it didn't take long for them to seat us (we apparently arrived at a slower time--when we left at 11am there were at least 15 people waiting to be seated) it took at least 30 minutes for them to bring out our food. The Food. Let me just say that the pecan pancakes I ordered were phenomenal. And all my children gulped down their orders in no time (not a small feat for my sometimes picky crew). So the food was fabulous! The Decor. We joked about how Smitty's is a like a museum of 70's kitsch. But that's not a bad thing. It has this great old-time vibe that we enjoyed. The Service. Like I said, it took awhile for us to get our food, and that time only seemed to be magnified by 10 because of those 12 people in our party, 7 were children. It's no fun to make kids wait that long (in public!) for breakfast. I would have given Smitty's 5 stars had our orders arrived more promptly. I'd recommend it to anyone willing to wait for a good breakfast (but maybe not to those with lots of children they'd rather feed more quickly).

Food was good but the decor was like a trip back in time.

Say with me, "I will go for breakfast. I will go for breakfast." A retro throw back to what I can describe as country home 70's, Smitty's is the best place in Idaho Falls to get breakfast. Reasons why: 1. BIG delicious portions 2. cheap sides 3. a variety of breakfast food from pancakes, eggs, crepes, german pancakes. 4. You will leave with an overly filled stomach. I always get the butter pecan pancakes with a side of hash browns, I want them now as I type this, so delicious. Heaping of yummy! i haven't had a breakfast I didn't like there. Smity's get very packed in the morning so get there early. I recommend this a breakfast place only. The rest of the food eh. It's okay, but their strength is breakfast.

As classic as American breakfast comes. Like it's from grandma's kitchen! I used to play violin on the AM radio every sunday morning at St. Paul Methodist and then would be driven here for a brunch of steak and eggs - a medium rare New York strip with two perfectly fried sunnyside up eggs and a side of crispy hashbrowns. Some days when I was really happy, I opted for the delicious apple waffle... or biscuits and gravy... to be enjoyed in one of the dining rooms, which feels like a relative's house. Great vibe, great institution, and great down-home cooking.

  • John S.

The decor of this place reminds me of my Grandma's old restaurant. The paintings are all of outdoor scenes done in a very classical style. The crystal chandeliers are very appealing too. The service was good. I was sat in a section at 9:55 and my waitress didn't start until 10. No problem, I had coffee and water while I waited. I ordered the pork chop breakfast. The chops were bone-in(bonus) but there was just a tad too much salt on them. Other than that the food was awesome.

Just your typical run of the mill diner. Nothing worth noting. If you are hungry, not a bad place to stop.

I had to write in response to several negative posts. Our overall experience was great. We had German pancakes & they were perfect. A real treat, & we ordered bacon due to a previous high recommendation & it was Ab/Fab--worth every calorie, even tho I only eat it about 3x a year. The over-easy eggs were perfectly cooked too. Coffee was just ok, but, hey, this isn't Peets or anything. When in Idaho Falls, adapt a little & partake of what sustains the folks in Idaho Falls.

Stopped by here for breakfast while I was in town for a business trip. Had heard about it from some colleagues who have been to this place and said the food was significantly better than other local establishments. Arrived shortly after 8am on a Saturday. Wasn't too busy, but there was a short wait regardless. When we were seated the staff we were promptly served. They were all incredibly friendly and I've never seen the coffee refilled so frequently at any other establishment. Definitely not the fastest place to get your food. I had ordered the chicken fried steak and it arrived around 10 minutes later. Generally from all the chicken fried steak I've had, the steak had been cubed. This was not. It was just some steak that was floured and cooked on the flat top. That being said, it wasn't quite as tender as it should have been. Eggs were cooked right and the hash browns were good. If you are in Idaho Falls, definitely stop by this place for breakfast. Friendly staff, a bottomless cup of coffee, and a breakfast that hits the spot.

have ate here several times for breakfast on the way thru. good food and good service, plus the door to door mormons were there to help you find religion if you haven't already found it.

I feel like I just walked into my grandmothers house and must admit, I feel a similar kindness from the folks inside I'd expect when going to grandma's house. The energy is very calming with only the hum of a whisk against a steel bowl w/ eggs being whipped as the background music. The wait staff is extremely polite. My ham an eggs breakfast is perfect! If your in Idaho Falls, and you want a great home cooked breakfast, Smittys is the place!

  • Diana L.

I am lovin' the retro vibe of this place. It's like eating breakfast in an antique store, only less dusty and with more old people. My bf got "the tastiest banana pancakes" he'd ever had here, and I tried to swallow my bacon waffle whole. I mean, come on, it's a tender, buttery waffle with bacon bits BAKED IN and two giant slices of bacon ON TOP. Can you really blame me? Just drizzle some maple syrup on top and you've got a little piece of heaven on a plate. Why can't I have bacon waffles every day? It's not fair. I hate you, cholesterol. You ruin everything.

I love going to eat at Smittys on weekends. The staff is always really sweet and friendly, and inside it feels like going to grandma's house. Very cozy inside. Beware on Sunday mornings though. Don't bring impatient children with you! Many times there is a wait, since this place is so popular.

if you are in idaho falls, this is a must visit. the sourdough pancakes were delicious. the decor of the place is interesting with lots of local paintings. it feels like life 50 years ago when you walk in but the food is impeccable and the service as well.

I'm pretty torn about my review of Smittys. And please note I am reviewing this from more of a "parents". I live in Idaho Falls and have been here on many occasions since we moved here. The food is amazing! Period. Never had anything better. I really love their huge Chief Salad and Pancakes. However its super pricey In my opinion but then again you pay for what you get. And its amazing. Waiting staff is a different story. The bus boys are nice but I swear ever woman that works there is so stinking rude not wanting to give you the time of day. Except for like maybe 2 which what are the odds your going to get them on any given day? As far as eating there with a family. If you can bring your own high chair. They are SO out dated and you can tell they're uncomfortable. And seriously every time I go in there I cut my hand on the sharp metal edges or pinch my finger in the folding arms. And be careful if you try to move them or adjust the position. If someones already in it the chair will still start to close up on them if you don't move it right!! Also if you have slightly older kids who like to grab and break the whole place is filled with plates and old antiques on reachable tables. Watch out! And the kids menu with smaller portions isn't any cheaper. Over all nice anniversary dinner or girls night out.....DEFINITELY. Taking the family to eat together.........................NO.

Went here based on reviews from yelp and we weren't disappointed. Hubby had the Eggs Benedict that our waitress recommended and my daughter wanted pancakes so we had the banana pancakes since one yelper said they were the best they ever had. Hubby said the EB was the best he ever had. I thought they were good, not the best for me but good. I'm more of a critic than he is. The same for our pancakes, they were good but not the best I've ever had. The LikeLike in Waikiki has the best Banana Pancakes I've ever had. The service was excellent and yes our coffee cup never was half full when someone was there to refill the cup, it's good coffee too. This is one of those places I was seeing billboard on for several hundred miles and definitely worth stopping for.

This could move to a two star. If you go here get breakfast. The lunch and dinner items are not really that great. After having them I vowed only to get breakfast when coming here. Breakfast is pretty good possibly a 4 star, but for what you get for the price is a little weak. Its hard because I always compare this place to another local favorite 50 miles away. Butterburrs in Pocatello. Now comparing these two places both have great breakfasts, but where Butterburrs pulls away is their lunch and dinner are also great. This place has been here for I think 40some years where as poky counterpart I think is around 30. Two oldies duke it out and if your in for a drive take the 50 mile trip. Smitty's is ok but if your hungry it wont disappoint.

We were lucky, we got there before the crowd came in. We ordered steak, chicken fried steak and eggs with the pancakes($31). It took a while before the food came. It seems every thing around this area takes forever. I guess people here are just very laid back, never in a hurry. One thing we noticed was our coffee never went under half cup during the wait. Overall, the food was good. The pancakes were a little burnt but still fluffy and moist. The steak was perfectly cooked, the fried steak was very tasty with the gravy. I craved for more after I was full.

We saw this restaurant on yelp and it was close by, so we decided to try it. We arrived at a busy time for a breakfast place -11am on a Sunday. There was a brief wait of less than 10 mins. The wait staff could not have been friendlier or more attentive to our every need. My son had steak, eggs, and pancakes, and I had the bacon and eggs. Few places seem to do over medium ages right, but they were perfect. Everything from the waitress to the food to the coffee made this a perfect experience. Thank you Smittys!

  • Dan U.

Throw back to 70's decor! I loved it! Sunday morning standing room only well worth the wait! Great service. We had the Swedish pancakes with the lingonberry butter, not a crumb left on the plate!! Two eggs on the side cooked perfect-over medium- and piping hot. Chicken fried steak plate very good. Would definitely eat there again when we are back in town!

The pancakes are good... everything else is marginal. Seems like the kind of place the locals love and the non-locals are underwhelmed with. Nothing was really fresh and the fish was too buttery.

Smitty's Hash Browns = AWESOME Best Hash Browns anywhere, period. I have ordered hash browns at so many breakfast diners that you would think I traveled the entire continent just to eat hash browns....and I have to give Smitty's a 14 out of 10 for their potatoes. They are in a class all by themselves. Of course you have to order something that really goes with them, like fried eggs, and bacon, to make it a complete experience. The other truly amazing breakfast item are the eggs benedict. Flat out wonderful. The hollandaise is done to perfection and should be given an award of some sort. The only problem is this, it's in Idaho Falls and I live in SF. I do travel to Idaho most Summers for the trout fishing, but Smitty's is always on my itinerary, coming and going, and of course at least one side trip, just for the hash browns. Did I say," the hash brown potatoes are awesome" ? Have to mention the servers, too. They are excellent. "I love Smitty's!"

It doesn't get better as a traditional diner. The people, the smell, the food, it is exactly what a diner should be. Don't come here for "fine dinning", come here for quick fast tasty diner food!! Get the buscuits and gravy. I drive here from SF on the weekend, and its the first place I stop!

There are many hometown diners in Idaho Falls, and several of them within a mile of Smitty's. I've not visited any of them, so I don't know which is best, but I promise you will not be disappointed with Smitty's. The interior looks like it's been hanging on the walls for the past 60 years. And who knows, maybe it has. The waitresses are all very nice with big smiles, most of whom seem to have been working there for some time, or at least are not high school kids on their first jobs. Lots and lots of pancake styles to choose from including German apple, Dutch, Swedish, fruit and whole grain. I chose (for my side) the sourdough pancakes. They were very thin, I guess that's their style, but absolutely delicious. The sourdough tang balanced perfectly with the maple syrup and butter. My main entree was a chili omelet. I know it sounds scary, but it was awesome. I mean, I but salsa on my eggs all the time. Why not chili? It might be a disaster, except the homemade chili is absolutely wonderful. It's sweet and spicy at the same time. Reminds me of Cincinnati. Oh the good ol' days!

Uhh, yeahhh. Pretty hard to mess up pancakes when that's one of the features in your name, but they somehow do so based on the amount of sugar they put in their syrup. UGH! I could barely finish my plate of pancakes based on both the taste and squinchy face I involuntarily kept making throughout the meal. On the plus side, the girlfriend did enjoy her cakes with a special mention for the apricot syrup. I did like the grandfather clock, nice old school touch ... but back away from the sugar bowl a little earlier the next time you mix up the syrup.

Freakin' delicious. We stayed two nights in Idaho Falls and ate here on both mornings -- it was that good. Definitely seemed like "the" local place. Great eggs, great pancakes, friendly service.

  • Adam B.

I was told the sourdough pancakes were the best 'plain' pancakes they had. I didnt like them too much as they tasted too sour and more like bread that is served on the side with dinner. I think it would have been good with different batter so I gave them 3 stars v. two.

    (3)
  • Thomas K.

Lots of breakfast choices, and very kid-friendly. If you've got little ones, Smitty's will treat you right by providing coloring sheets and crayons, right-sized (and right-priced) kid portions on the menu and they'll even give you the kids' drinks in to-go cups with lids. Don't miss the roll-ups (thin pancakes rolled up and smothered in apples or peaches, topped by a dollop of whip cream). Definitely worth the short walk from the hotels on the waterfront (Red Lion, Best Western, etc).

As far as pricing, it seems quite reasonable. One gets a good portion of traditional diner food. I can't say anything I had there in our three visits was incredible or even memorable but the first two times the service and staff were wonderful, helpful and friendly. The last time, unfortunately the time I will remember, was met with a new-ish waitress who failed to explain pricing over an item and by the time we got our bill, it was a bit over what we expected. One would think the management would just agree to comp the difference but no....we felt as though we were in a court of law with explanations galore about how we should have known to ask about the pricing. I would have just given the customer the benefit of the doubt, refunded the $2 and made a satisfied customer. But no, so now I really can't recommend it except to say it is ok food, not fast food but ok diner fare food. And the help, it depends on who waits on you......

We were driving through IF on the way to SLC from Yellowstone, and decided to have a breakfast there. This place is conveniently located, the staff is very helpful and friendly. The Swedish pancakes were superb. Fried eggs with hash browns and toast were quite all right. The omelet could be better though (hence 4 stars and not 5). The mushrooms in it we straight out of the can, they did not taste well at all. The service was quick though, and overall experience was very pleasant. I would definitely recommend this place and would have breakfast there again.

My husband chose to take us to this pancake house...not my first choice... BUT I WAS WRONG to doubt this place! Excellent quality traditional breakfast food. And we both got our full for $20 total! I loved the Dutch Baby so much! It was perfect just with lemon and powdered sugar (but I also tried it with all the syrups: maple, strawberry, boysenberry, & apricot) Super friendly service and homey ambiance. We will be back.

I LOVE places like this. I knew I was going to like it even more when I saw their "People Love us On Yelp!" Sticker! Winning! We were cruising thru on our way to Great Falls and stopped here for breakfast. It has a old country/antique feeling & the wait staff made us feel right at home. I ordered the biscuits & gravy & it was a HUGE plate, I couldn't even eat the hash browns that came with it. The other people at the table ordered omelettes & said they were great, too. If we travel this way again I would def. make a point to stop here!

The absolute worst meal I've had in years! I need to eat gluten-free. The waitress knew exactly what to do (Hooray!), but the kitchen got it wrong. The steak was prepared with gluten. The waitress caught it and had them do it over. When the food arrived the steak was not seasoned at all, the eggs were dry and cold, the hash browns were not cooked as ordered. The only thing I liked in this meal was the tea, which I brought in my purse.

Quite a wait, but wonderful service, a lot of food, and constant coffee refills. Well satisfied! Delicious omelettes, I had the one with everything in it next to the garbage pale kid, and a side salad. Forward thinking for this prt of the country, and they offer ever add-on or substitution you could want. Thank you for the great service!!

For breakfast we had French toast, German pancakes with eggs & bacon. Everything was wonderful. Service is great. Food hot. Will be back for supper!

Loved it here. AMAZING pancakes! Great service. Great portions and great prices. Exactly what a breakfast restaurant should be!

  • Kippy D.

Perfect pancakes. Crisp on the outside, and fluffy in the middle. Don't really need any syrup, and the fruit syrups on the table tend to be a too sweet addition. (Shhhh, I put butter and salt on my pancakes) The chicken fried steak was seasoned well, but the batter was glossy and a bit overcooked. Next time I will order the eggs, pancakes and a side of gravy.

Excellent breakfast every time. One of the few remaining diners that make genuine German pancakes. Portions are excellent and never leave you hungry when you leave. I recommend to anyone looking for a great diner. Also breakfast is served all day!

So this place has got to be the Homiest place I have ever been and I would like to point out I have been to a lot of homey restaurants.

I can't comment on the food because I was never seated. I saw at least 4 employees... One was messing with the curtains. Another one was facing away and never turned around. One came from the back and waited on a table, looked at me but never so much as nodded in my direction. And the 4th came out and waited on a different table and also looked at me and then looked the away. All they had to do was indicate that they new I was there.... I was there for approximately 5 minutes. It's not as though it was packed. At 4:30 on a Sunday there were only 3-4 tables. I travel through here at least once a month...but will never set foot in there again. Apparently, they already had all the business they needed!

Great food and good service. Like other reviews said its a busy and popular spot. We waited roughly 10 min for a table on a Wednesday morning, not terrible. Pancakes were delicious!

  • Ray M.

My wife craved German pancakes so we stopped on our way through. We've been here before, always enjoyed the food. We usually stick to pancakes etc. but there's a pattern that the service is at best mediocre and yesterday was way below mediocre. Waitress forgot part of our order and even claimed not to have heard it even though she wrote it down. But worse was the service to the tables around us, 3 tables were non English speaking and there was no effort at all to assist them. I felt bad for those customers. When she got to us she says I hope you speak English! I suggest some fresh blood in the wait staff and some training!

We started our day here, based on Yelp reviews and we were not disappointed! The beverages were were never empty, the food was hot and delish! The 'Thank You' on the bill clinched it though, if I lived here it would be my regular breakfast place!

Stopped here based on Yelp reviews and was not disappointed. Very friendly, attentive staff kept refilling my coffee, which was truly delicious. I ordered an everything omelette and pancakes with strawberries, all of which was quite filling.

While the hotel we were staying at offered a continental breakfast, we chose to eat out. Smitty's was recommended. There is ALWAYS a wait here - there was never a "down" time when we were here. The hostess was very pleasant. We had asked for a booth, and after a time, she came over to check w/us - as a table was available and would we like that instead of a booth. How thoughtful! We chose to wait for a booth. There are lovely hanging glass antique type lamps over the tables. There were lots of locals and tourists alike here. Our server was excellent - always checking back to see if we needed anything and refilling coffee and water. The menu was extensive - and you could build your own omlette -)which I did - and it was perfect; neither my husband nor I can stand eggs that are over cooked or cooked at too high a temperature. And . . . a first - if you wanted to order only 1/2 an order of eggs benedict, you could!!! The egg on this would have been fried, not poaches, as done traditionally. You get a side of hashbrowns, toast, green salad, or cottage cheese - how great! If we were locals, we'd be back.

The gluten free pancakes were decent. The high fructose syrup was disappointing. The omelette was crappy food service of America low quality fare...tasteless with highly processed ingredients.

Ordered 2 cheeseburgers and the family recipe fried chicken... cheeseburgers were well cooked, moist and flavorful...the fried chicken had too much salt in the coating...well cooked...but had puddles of oil on the plate from the chicken...great service...original table had a noisy light above, and moved to another table with no issues...and toast served with fried chicken?

Breakfast is on point. Pancakes are perfect every time. Portions are huuuuuge. You won't leave hungry. Chef salad is ginormous. Seriously, plan on splitting it.

Potato pancakes. Holy moly those were good! I'd give the place 5 stars except the service was a bit thin and they were out of ribs early in the evening on Saturday. Then I bit into those little slices of heaven... I shall return.

Best breakfast in Idaho Falls hands down. Great prices and service. Mimosa's are priced right and delicious. I highly recommend.

One the best old school diners I've been to. They haven't updated much, but that just makes it feel all the more authentic. The portions are generous and the service is consistent. I got the Denver Omelette, and it was honestly one of the best I've ever had. It was neat--not to saucy--with a great Hollandaise sauce. The hash browns were cooked well. The iced coffee wasn't brewed however, which I was a little disappointed about, but I opted for an iced tea instead. You can tell they've kept up with the times to a certain extent. The option for gluten-free pancakes and free wi-fi, among other things, keeps this place cool, but without taking away from the traditional diner experience. Young and old will enjoy this diner's food, service, and ambiance.

Two in our party had ribs since it was Saturday. They said the meat fell off the bones and had a delicious smoky flavor. Another had the pork chops and enjoyed them. Another had a ham scramble with pancakes. Both were delicious. My order was not so good because I'm vegetarian: oil soaked "fresh" vegetables and a overpriced smallish baked potato. The house salad was good because of the balsamic dressing. Old-fashioned restaurant and decor with excellent wait staff.

  • Tiffani M.

My husband and I went to Smitty's based on yelp reviews. He ordered the sour-jack pancakes, side of ham and hash-browns. He enjoyed his breakfast very much! I had a make your own omelette with hash browns and toast. The hash-browns were very good, however the omelette was just ok. The staff was very friendly and attentive. The Resturant was very clean and tidy. It's not at the top of list, but we may go back and give it another try.

3 egg omelet with 2 toppings, PLUS 3 gluten free full sized pancakes on the side = $7.99! What. A. Bargain. Tasted delicious too. Went on morning of 4th of July, very busy but even so, service was great, food came out hot, coffee was re-filled without asking, and total bill came out to just a few cents over $20 bucks. Came hungry, left happy.

Stopped in for breakfast. Great friendly staff and quick service. The German Pancake is huge, like Fred Flintstone huge and delicious. They give a simple meal a little more taste, more amazing than what they charge for it.

One of our family's favorite places to eat in Idaho Falls for breakfast. Just about everyone here in town enjoys Smitty's. Right downtown, next to the falls... good coffee shop type of breakfast. Great kids menu.

  • Vic L.

I give four stars for food, kindness, cleanliness and did I say food? Geeat portions and great taste. My husband had the ribs and they were so tender the meat fell off the bones. I had the Smitty's chef salad and boy was it huge, fresh and delicious!

I'm not really sure why, but for some reason I didn't like this place the very first time I went like 6 years ago. I was wrong I apologize Mr.Smitty. This place is DELICIOUS for breakfast! I ordered the bacon omelet it came out with super crispy hash browns.I had them put their sausage gravy on top of the hash browns. Everything was amazingly flavorful. They don't skimp on the meat in the omelet or the cheese. I highly recommend this place for breakfast. After your done go take a walk around the river, burn off some of those scrumptious calories.

Schmittys is a tradition for us whenever we pass through Idaho Falls. While the other menu items are decent, the pancakes are what you should focus on. Whether it's German, buckwheat, Sourdough or buttermilk you will not be disappointed. The service has a friendly hometown feel, and the decor reminds me of breakfast at my grandparents home. If you are in the area this is a must.

  • Brittany S.

Smitty's is a dream come true pancake house! Charming decor reminiscent of my own Grandma's house, and you can have breakfast all day. If you are into quaint homestyle restaurants, give Smitty's a try - and bring the whole family.

  • Kyle K.

So after a long drive, me and my friend needed to get something in our stomachs, and I'm so glad we chose Smittys! First off, our waitress was real friendly and pretty funny, she had some good suggestions that we went forward with, and to start off I ordered a side of the steak fingers, which were really, really awesome. Think little super tender slices of chicken fried steak, and be sure to use A1 as a dipping sauce! Next were the sourdough pancakes, and I can't really type and describe it to you, but pretty much imagine real melt-in-your-mouth pancakes that have a real tart yogurt taste, add the apricot syrup or berry syrup to that and you've got a winner on your hands! All I can say closing out, is that I wish I can come back more often to Idaho Falls just for this place!

Great breakfast foods. Not as impressed with their steaks, and other dinners. I would recommend their crepes and waffles however. Not 4 or 5 star quality, but its a step above IHOP.

We stopped here on our way from Yellowstone. We had seen it on Yelp a few weeks before our trip. While on our last stop in Yellowstone and 2 hours away from Smitty's..those steak fingers were on my husband's mind. I was thinking about the Swedish pancakes with Lingon Berry Butter. I was so glad we waited! The food was good! What we ended up liking the most was the Gluten free Pancakes....like reviewers on other sites we were waiting for a gluten reaction because they tasted SOOO close to regular pancakes. I mean they were delicious! My husband said he would drive the 11 hrs it takes to get there...just for those pancakes! They had homemade desserts as well. The Mango Cream cake was the best we have ever had. The best way I could describe it would be that scene in Ratatouille..when the critic eats the Ratatouille and is transferred back to his childhood. It took me there...lol! Overall everything else was good..those two things were just stand alone great!! If we are ever back in the area we will definitely make it one of our stops!

Two words......Potato Pancakes! I crave those things! Wish I lived closer to Idaho Falls because this place would be my daily breakfast spot. I have had everything from biscuits and gravy, hamburgers, pancakes and french dip. Everything has been great! Good coffee as well. I would go back in a heartbeat.....who am I kidding I look forward to eating at Smitty's!

Such a disappointment. I had very fond memories of Smitty's. . . Unfortunately, the years have been unkind to this restaurant. Because of my fondest of this diner as a child. I have given it multiple opportunities since returning to Idaho Falls a year ago. The service was marginally acceptable, but the food was horrid. Food is obviously all frozen reconstituted from the restaurant food companies like US Foods/Sysco. Nicholas, etc. Nothing appeared to be fresh or homemade. Food portion was small and improperly cooked. Either overcooked or undercooked. The obviously frozen/or canned vegetables in particular were overcooked and grey. The Salmon was way overcooked. Deep fried Chicken Tenders were burnt. Eggs were dark brown and overcooked. Had a Turkey Pot Pie (obviously, a frozen food company item) and the crust was doughy, raw. Nothing good lasts forever and obviously, Smitty's time has past.

    (1)
  • Maggie W.

well worth the wait to get a table... if you can, time your visit during huckleberry season, as they make an amazing add to any pancake. As expected, Idahoans know their way around a potato, and the hash browns were also top notch. I know I'll be craving this breakfast again!

Week in and week out I travel the country for work. As part of my career I train in good customer service, and processes. When I get home I'm exhausted and just want to rest. One of the places that I frequent is Smitty's to reconnect with home and have some of the best breakfast food in the nation. I'm in such a relaxed food comma after eating here that I've never remembered to leave a review. I love their biscuits and gravy, bacon is cooked perfect. The German pancake is more like a dinner roll- not sweet. Omelets are perfect and even better the service is fast. They don't allow take out orders on the weekends so they can focus on guests in person. Wait time on Saturdays is about 15 min.

  • Laura K.

Loved going to Smitty's as a kid but hadn't been in years. While back in town, I went for breakfast and had the potato pancakes. They've got bits of grated potato in them but they're decidedly not latkes. Served with your choice of applesauce, sour cream or bacon, they were phenomenal. I'll happily order them again next time I'm there. Service was mostly on target, aside from some confusion over the drinks order, and everyone was friendly, just as I remembered. Thanks for validating my nostalgia!

  • Brian S.

This place gets 5 stars on the pancakes alone. The fried chicken and soup was too salty for me but those pancakes are ridiculously good. I got buttermilk pancakes that just melt in your mouth. They are fluffy, thick, and moist. I always come here when I am in IF just for the pancakes. The place is old looking and run down, but gives it that classic dinner in the movies look and feel. I serious dream of these pancakes.

    (5)
  • Sanford F.

This place was good. Not great but good. As others stated, the fried chicken is very salty and that's saying a lot coming from me since I like a lot of salt. The chicken was pretty moist though. I also got pancakes as one of my sides and they were great so I think this place is probably better for breakfast than dinner.

    (3)
  • Kiersta C.

This place was amazing. The gluten free pancakes were the best I've ever had, bacon was cooked the way I asked and the service was great!

    (5)
  • Hannibal S.

They have German pancakes that are great. I would consider this place a breakfast joint. Never had a steak here, it usually pretty dead at dinner time. The price is high compared to other breakfast places.

    (3)
  • Jackie S.

This place has the best pancakes in town. Everything else is so so including the service. But if you want pancakes in IF you've got to come here. The coffee is down right boring and I'm not finicky about my coffee (usually).

    (3)
  • Jennifer M.

Smitty's used to be wonderful. Not sure what happened but over the years it's gone downhill. Now every time I eat here I leave with an upset stomach and within an hour or so have diarrhea. TMI I know. The servers are very friendly and everyone works hard. But the food is just not what it used to be.

    (2)
  • Vickie R.

Service not so great and I certainly question the sanitation there. We had a long wait to get seated and were the only ones waiting. When being seated, one waitress ran into me without as much as a word. We had a long wait for coffee, water and to place our order. People were getting up to get their own coffee that morning. My daughter did have a great omelet, but the coffee was weak at best and when I ordered a scone, it ended up being fry bread with butter! Not my cup of tea. This part gets gross - I went to use the restroom. One stall had excrement all over it, the next had urine all over without any toilet paper and there were no toilet seat covers available. The third stall just had a curtain so I used that stall and got the heck out of Dodge. I you don't mind long waits, mediochre service, and questionable sanitation, then this is the place for you.

  • Amber L.

  • Jonathon S.

  • Colin M.

Really decent food at good prices. I had a Cobb salad and it was huge. Everything was completely fresh. My wife's omelet was excellent as well. Clam chowder was a little fishy tasting, but their fries were also great. We thought this place would be like Denny's, but it is definitely a big step up from them!

  • Buzz M.

  • Yolanda Y.

  • Derek B.

I love this place. It's the same as it always was. Get the buttermilk pancakes and anything with bacon. Everything is good, but those two items are their strengths. Take time to admire the incredible artwork!

  • Kyle C.

I've eaten here every time I find myself in Idaho Falls and I've never been disappointed. The food is delicious and reasonably priced, and the staff is very nice. They also have a great variety beyond just pancakes and steak. (I've honestly never even tried the pancakes personally.)

  • W F.

  • Michael M.

  • Carol H.

    (5)

  • Susan F.

Smitty's is a dream come true pancake house! Charming decor reminiscent of my own Grandma's house, and you can have breakfast all day. If you are into quaint homestyle restaurants, give Smitty's a try - and bring the whole family.

Nothing good lasts forever and obviously, Smitty's time has past.

well worth the wait to get a table... if you can, time your visit during huckleberry season, as they make an amazing add to any pancake.

This place was good. Not great but good. As others stated, the fried chicken is very salty and that's saying a lot coming from me since I like a lot of salt. The chicken was pretty moist though. I also got pancakes as one of my sides and they were great so I think this place is probably better for breakfast than dinner.

This place was amazing. The gluten free pancakes were the best I've ever had, bacon was cooked the way I asked and the service was great!

They have German pancakes that are great. I would consider this place a breakfast joint. Never had a steak here, it usually pretty dead at dinner time. The price is high compared to other breakfast places.

This place has the best pancakes in town. Everything else is so so including the service. But if you want pancakes in IF you've got to come here. The coffee is down right boring and I'm not finicky about my coffee (usually).

Smitty's used to be wonderful. Not sure what happened but over the years it's gone downhill. Now every time I eat here I leave with an upset stomach and within an hour or so have diarrhea. TMI I know. The servers are very friendly and everyone works hard. But the food is just not what it used to be.

Great breakfast foods. Not as impressed with their steaks, and other dinners. I would recommend their crepes and waffles however. Not 4 or 5 star quality, but its a step above IHOP.
